NOW BACK TO CAPT. BRODIE’S LATEST FISHING REPORTS…

Today I had Bryan Brasher and Robert Callaway aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, and this duo of anglers wanted to catch plenty of fish to take back to Tennessee. Well, they got their wish! Better yet, Bryan is a noted sports editor out of Memphis, Tennessee for the Commercial Appeal, and he also was looking for a feature story on TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, and the quality of fishing here in south Mississippi. 

Thank goodness the fish continued to cooperate, and Bryan and Robert caught fish like a bunch of mad men. Our first stop produced really nice white trout cast after cast, and the men were simply having a ball loading up the ice chest. On average these fish were bigger than the ones we caught on the last trip a bit father out, and a number of delicious ground mullet joined the melee too.

Bryan and Robert fished well, and in no time they stashed 109 tasty trout in the ice chest, and we left them biting. Well, there was a bit of room left in the box, and it was time to put them on a little bigger bite, so it was off to the black drum holes.

Just like our first stop for trout, well, the black drum were cooperating too, and a fine bite ensued. Soaking dead shrimp on the bottom on a falling tide the men proceeded to battle scrappy drum out of the bay’s depths. Bryan had the hot hand when it came to catching the biggest white trout, but Robert had the hottest bite on the drum although they each caught plenty.

Thirteen drum nearly filled up the box, we left them biting too, and we started out to finish off the day with a few flounders. However, the winds really picked up, and the men said their arms ached from catching so many fish so fast they were ready to head back in. Both of these gentlemen were a pleasure to fish with, and seemed to really appreciate and enjoy our morning fishing the fish-filled waters of south Mississippi.

According to Bryan there will be a full page article on our trip coming out in the Commercial Appeal on Sunday. Really looking forward to seeing the article and pictures, and will post it if I can. Last week I had outdoor writer Jill “Easton” Spencer, and today Bryan Brasher, both award winning writers, quality people, and people that truly appreciate our great outdoors. People like Bryan and Jill are working hard to promote our fishing and clean waters here in south Mississippi, and their work is much appreciated. Many thanks my friends!

ABOVE: Despite threatening skies all around, the Terry Stapleton group, more return clients, hopped aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS and proceeded to hammer the white trout and ground mullet. This group of men from Georgia fished hard, and in no time they easily put 161 white trout and ground mullet on ice. Bottom rigs baited with cut squid and croaker was deadly on the white trout today. Stopped by the black drum hole and quickly caught one, but a big squall came quickly toward us so we passed up on the drum fishing. On this trip while at the barrier islands the Gulf of Mexico and the isle’s surf and bars were full of life. Massive schools of mullet, a few pompano jumping, and sharks and jack crevalles going ballistic on the mullet was a sight for sore eyes.

Spawning blue claw crabs were all over the shallow bars, as well as huge stingrays and cow nose rays everywhere to entertain. The beaches and sandy bottoms look clean, real clean, and mantis shrimp holes were still in multitudes all about the clear shallows. Bottom line, if you are still scared of the oil’s effects, and that’s keeping you from fishing, well, all is back to normal, and you’re missing out on some great fishing and beautiful sights.

What can I say, more great clients, and a good bite on the white trout early on. We left them biting!  Caught 6 or 7 flounders, but today only one of them was of legal size. Fished the bridges for a short time and boated 3 black drum and a couple of white trout. By they way, this was Charlie’s second trip aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS this summer, and you can bet he’s coming back. A good short trip Charlie, and be sure to thank Mary and Hampton again for me, they were fun to fish with. Got these fish cleaned in no time too, for Charlie, Mary, and Hampton joined me at the fish cleaning table with some of us scaling and others filleting.The bite on the bigger fish would have probably turned on later in the day, but we managed to bring back a fine catch anyway. NOW BACK TO CAPT. BRODIE’S FISHING REPORTS…

When Leonard Tasler contacted me he said that he only needed a few fish. No kidding..he just wanted enough to go in a tiny ice chest. OK…that’s easy enough. But then he said he wanted some Florida pompano. Well, I told Leonard that I saw a few a while back, but I wouldn’t guarantee any pomps.  He said that didn’t matter and that I could use him as a “guinea pig” to seek out a couple. With that understood it was off to the barrier islands the next morning.

Seas were close to calm, water on the isle’s flats was good and improving as the sun got higher in the sky. Once I saw the first fish jump in the wake the anchor was dropped, and Leonard began fishing. We went through plenty of ladyfish, catfish, and a couple of small jack crevalles, but in the end we weeded out three beautiful Florida pompano. Man do those babies fight!

Heck, it had been so long since we had these beautiful hard-fighting fish aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, I almost forgot just how exciting it is to catch them. Found them jumping at two different locations, but only caught fish at the first stop. By the way, a couple of dwarf jack crevalles the size of the pompano added to the excitement too, plus a big speckled trout fell for a piece of cut squid..go figure!

Although this was a short trip it all went well with calm seas and the fish Leonard wanted. By the way, the isle’s flats are loaded with spawning crabs, they are all over the bottom, and that means the pompano should be there in really good numbers. Seems like today the bite was early, but want to get some takers to give the pomps another shot. Any gamers out there?

As long as we have decent weather to fish the barrier islands the Florida pompano fishing should remain steady throughout October, white trout reefs have been on fire, black drum and flounder are biting well too, and throw in a couple of redfish and specks and you have a very diverse fishery to delve into here in south Mississippi.

Today I had Troy Whiteneck back from Texas, and as usual the fishing was fantastic. Ran directly to the shallow reef we fished yesterday with the Craft group, and sure enough the bite was on. A bit slow at first, but soon it was “GAME ON” with trout coming over the sides one after another.

The kids had a blast catching trout, crabs, stingrays, and catfish too. For the morning’s grand finale the kids were allowed to feed the sea gulls menhaden behind the boat. Man did they ever get a kick out of that! Before noon they had 90 fine white trout and ground mullet on ice. Troy loves white trout, and this is his fourth trip out in quest of the tasty fillets.

Once they got tired of catching the delicious trout it was a run to the flounder holes, and there 4 nice flatfish were added to the mix of trout. With plenty of meat in the box we decided to end the day fishing for black drum around the bridges, and the dark-hued bottom dwellers were eager to suck in a dead shrimp and put up a battle on the light tackle.

Although Zack got the biggest fish on the last trip it was Ashley that landed the biggest on this outing. Ashley’s big drum nearly pulled here out of the boat, but in the end she subdued the strong fighting fish. Ended the day with 7 nice black drum, a great way to end a day of nonstop fish catching fun.

Back at the D’Iberville Marina, Zack and Kyle scaled the fish while I filleted. Funny thing was we did this right in the middle of a severe thunder storm. Heavy rain falling down on us through the bridge cracks, and lighting popping all around made our fish cleaning rather intense, but an afternoon we’ll remember for some time to come.

What can I say, fishing is simply great here in south Mississippi, our waters are clean and clear, and the fish are here for the taking. So what are you waiting for, come on down and catch your share of fish aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

Today I had Randy Bell from California back again for his third year in a row light tackle fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. On this trip he had his son Yuki, as well as Jerry Furby aka “JW” back aboard as usual. However, on this trip he added his son Corey too, and man did these guys catch a lot of edible fish. First they hammered the fine white trout in the Back Bay of Biloxi, and they would often catch them two at a time. Caught 2 really nice speckled trout there too!

Next stop was the flounder holes, and there they evicted 9 gorgeous specimens from the shallows. Some real doormats! Ended the day at the bridges, and there 5 nice black drum and a few more white trout were added to the fine mixed catch. As usual, all of the guys followed me back home where we formed an assembly line of sorts and quickly cleaned up all of the fish. What great fun!

Since I dropped my camera in the water today the guys came in and we downloaded Yuki’s pictures to my computer. Along with my wife we chatted with the guys for a while, drinking coffee, and nibbling on some snacks. Randy’s son are a real pleasure to fish with, extremely polite, courteous, and eager to learn. Corey really likes this fishing tradition aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, and is now eager to fish with the group next year. What can I say, quality people, great fishing, and plenty of fish for their traditional fish fry too. Come on down the fishing is great in south Mississippi!

Along with his friends Creig Belt and Trey Payne the gentlemen caught a little bit of everything including: white trout, ground mullet, speckled trout (3 really big ones), lots of small sharks, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, seacatfish, gafftopsail catfish, oyster fish, pinfish, croakers, sand trout, and black drum. Fishing wasn’t stellar today, but they got to fish in the Back Bay of Biloxi, Mississippi Sound, as well as around Ship Island. ABOVE: Sunday, August 8, 2010 – Mike Mixon from Idaho had a great thrill landing this hard-fighting jack crevalle on 10-pound-test Yo-Zuri Hybrid fluorocarbon line. While fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, Mike caught and released this pretty crevalle while fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, a 22-foot Blazer Bay bay boat.
