Fishing Report – Freshwater-Friday, March 16, 2007
Fished the Tchoutacabouffa River today using shiners and various jigs on jig poles. Very windy conditions, however we still managed to land nice 10 crappies with one weighing a pound-and-a-half, 1 nice striped bass, 4 largemouth bass, and a fine goggle-eye perch. Missed a number of big fish on the flimsy jig poles. Water level in river was low due to a strong front wind that blew through today. Fish were caught in 12 to 20-feet of water, and are in pre-spawn mode. Warmer weather should send them to shallower water soon, and in April the shellcracker perch will begin to bed, followed by the bluegill perch in May. One thing for sure, the upper regions of the Tchoutacabouffa River is an extremely beautiful and pristine freshwater system; an area that looks like you’re going back in time. Today we saw wood ducks, mottled ducks, ospreys, a water moccasin, painted turtles, a 4-foot needle nose gar, Canadian geese, a red hawk, and wax-wings; a cornucopia of magnificent wildlife that adds to the allure of fishing these waters. My new Shimano Spheros reel and St. Croix Triumph rod handled the scrappy striped bass with ease.

Fishing Report – Sunday, March 18, 2007
Today I took Larry Loreman and his friends and family on an outing to the Keesler Reef outside Deer Island. Armed with Shimano spinning reels and St. Croix rods, and a 40-ounce bag of Killer Bee Bait squid for bait, these four gentlemen proceeded to catch white trout and ground mullet for hours on end. The heavy winds predicted never came to be, and we enjoyed a morning of calm seas and clearing water on a rising tide. Saw a couple of really large Spanish mackerel on the prowl too. Our catch was quite impressive…right at 400 fine eating fish, and it looks like the Loreman group will be dining on fresh and delicious fillets for a while. Read the rest of this entry »

Took Mike Lacey from The Sun Herald on a 6-hour trip today. All I can say is “wow”! Mike, his son Blake, and Blake’s girlfriend Jessie caught southern kingfish a.k.a. “ground mullet”, one speckled trout, one Spanish mackerel, and a few nice white trout until they were worn out. Although we released many fish our take home tally was 135 of the best eating fish in our waters, and the gang did a great job of catching the Mississippi Sound’s visitors. It looks like the spring run is on, and anyone interested in the hot bottom fishing action better book a trip now. Of our catch, over 95% were fine ground mullet (big fat females), and we left the fish still in a feeding frenzy. Read the rest of this entry »
