Louisiana Marsh Fishing Report

Saturday, June 9, 2007

Had the pleasure of taking Randy and Mary Camp of Hattiesburg, MS along with their daughter Terri and son-in-law Jeremy on an outing to the Louisiana marsh. Started them off tossing popping corks rigged with soft-plastics like Salt Water Assassins, Cocahoes, and Mr. Twister Finshad under gulls working the surface. They had a blast catching speckled trout, white trout, and gafftopsail catfish on the sensitive St. Croix Triumph spinning rods, and although were a novice group they caught on quickly to the art of cork fishing. Also, they got to see the magnificent bird life including large numbers of gulls and pelicans nesting on the marsh isles, as well as dolphin, and a huge tripletail free swimming on the surface. We ended the day bottom fishing around Isle au Pitre where they able to catch a number of ground mullet. This group of fine people also got to experience the power and drama involved in being caught in an afternoon thunderstorm. Swirling black and purple clouds, lighting popping all around, 30 knots plus winds, and driving rain gave us a good example of Mother Nature’s fury. Bottom line, I got them home alive and well, but very wet, and they had a story to tell for a time to come. The easterly winds are finally starting to settle down, so book a trip now!

Louisiana Marsh Fishing Report

Friday-June 1, 2007

Today I had the pleasure to fish with Buddy and Karreen DeWeese of Ridgeland, MS, and took them on a tour of the Louisiana marsh off Mississippi’s mainland. This pair of experienced anglers managed to catch a mess of specks and white trout, including those hard fighting gafftopsail catfish while tossing popping corks into feeding gulls. They also got to walk the shell-laden beaches of Isle au Pitre, and Karreen flipped out over the vast array of shells. Today was the first day in weeks that the easterly winds finally settled down. Waters are still a bit murky, but the fish are out there feeding under the gulls. Thousands of pelicans and gulls are establishing their nest on these outer isles, and are quick to detect trout chasing shrimp to the surface.

Regards,

Capt. Robert L. Brodie
