Biloxi, MS – Pre Hurricane Fishing Was Excellent – Another Outdoor Writer Impressed By Mississippi’s Excellent Pompano Fishery
As I write this report there is a dangerous hurricane heading towards the Golden Gulf Coast, and I hope and pray everyone out there fares as well as possible, and plays it safe.

A quick note about fishing a few days before the hurricane. On Saturday I picked up outdoor writer/photographer David Hawkins of Mississippi Outdoors, his wife, and daughter at the Palace Casino Marina, and headed out to the Katrina Reef. There the trio of anglers caught a nice mess of white trout and ground mullet. The bite was a bit slower that usual, so we decided to give the Florida pompano another shot with 10 knot northeast winds blowing across the Mississippi Sound.

Once at the island the anglers got off to a quick start by landing a few fish in the crystal clear shallows. Of course big ladyfish, bluefish, and a number of juvenile cobia kept the bite consistent. Big sharks, stingrays, and spawning crabs were all over the flats too. In the end this family group boated 6 of those gorgeous and tasty exotic fish. And once again, like all my other clients this summer, it was their fish pompano ever caught.

They were amply impressed with the fighting ability, and acrobatics displayed by the gorgeous silver-hued fish. Just another successful day of fishing in our big back yard know as south Mississippi.

I sincerely hope all in the path of this deadly storm heads for the hills, and plays it extremely safe to fish another day. Hope to be back up and chartering as soon as this storm clears the coast. And as one of my best friends always tells me “Keep your powder dry!”
