BILOXI, MS FISHING – Big Black Drum, Sheepshead, & Flounders Bite – And It’s Time To Shoot Ducks!

Ran a trip a few days ago on Monday, and the Dan Baston group hammered the big sheepshead and black drum. Started out in Fort Bayou looking for specks, but the gnats were so bad we went back to the Ocean Springs Oyster Reef where we had bee slaughtering the white trout and ground mullet, as well as a few nice specks.

However, the last cold front dropped the water’s temp by nearly 6 degrees, and the fish weren’t there. Running out of time, well, a quick run back into the Back bay of Biloxi delivered some rod bending action with big sheepshead, black drum, and a big flounder.

The drum bite was off a bit, but the big sheepshead took up the slack. These guys fished hard to fill up a live well with the hard-fighting bottom dwellers, and in the process we missed quite a few big fish. Anyway, at least they got to experience some light tackle fun, and the 3 gentlemen were excellent anglers and a lot of fun to fish with. Dan doesn’t live very far away, and he intends to come back this summer and experience the barrier island Florida pompano bite aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

Sounds like a plan! And a lot of fun too! If you’ve kept up with my reports and pictures, well, you know the phenomenal summer my clients had catching those hard-fighting, beautiful, and tasty Florida pompano in the gin-clear shallows of the barrier islands. In the end their final tally included: 10 big sheepshead, 1 “14-inch” speckled trout, and 3 black drum with 1 pushing 20-pounds.

DUCK HUNTING BEGINS ABOARD “TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS!”

Yeah that’s right, it’s time to shoot ducks once again, and here at TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS we’re geared up and ready for another season. Already have the two days after Thanksgiving booked (1 man each day), and a few more in December. However, there will be more as the season progresses, especially if the weather and ducks cooperate.

A fully guided trip goes for $450 a day (that price is the same for 1 or 2 hunters), and it includes myself as well as an assistant guide to help out with the boat and all of the decoys involved.  These are big-water diving duck hunts with an emphasis on redheads. Posted are a few picks from last season’s hunts. Gets me fire up just looking at them! Enjoy!

Here at TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS we offer both fishing and duck hunting options. And if you opt, we can conduct a “cast and blast” on the same day. Hunting in the morning and fishing in the afternoon, a great way to spend a day in south Mississippi.

Biloxi, MS – Huge Black Drum Deliver Exciting Light Tackle Action!

Well I finally got back from my vacation in Nashville, TN, and got right back into the fish catching mode. Not a bit of rust for this captain, because two the trips ran on Friday delivered plenty of non stop fish catching fun.

MORNING TRIPFriday, November 14, 2008 – On this outing my two comeback clients were Ronnie and Sue Buice of Georgia, and did they ever catch a mess of fish. Started out on the Ocean Springs Channel Reef, and there the bite on white trout, speckled trout, and ground mullet was fast and furious.  Using popping corks and live shrimp the duo hammered the reef dwellers, and when they used up all of the live shrimp they had 80 or more white trout and ground mullet, as well as three nice speckled trout in the live well.

014

Ronnie and Sue Buice of Georgia with their fine catch of black drum, sheepshead, speckled trout, white trout, and ground mullet made aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

As if that wasn’t enough action, the anglers fished for drum on the way home, and in the “honey hole” they proceeded to land 14 beautiful black drum, as well as a nice sheepshead. A couple of giants were hooked and lost, but as you will see in this report they landed some giants on Sunday. A wonderful morning of fishing, and it was quite cold at that. Ronnie and Sue had so much fun that they booked me for that Sunday.

002

Sue Buice of Georgia with one of the many drum she caught fishing in the Back Bay of Biloxi aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

In total: 80 plus white trout and ground mullet, 3 nice specks, 14 black drum, and 1 sheepshead. An excellent morning of fishing in south Mississippi!

AFTERNOON TRIP – Friday, November 14, 2008 - On this late afternoon run my clients were Fela Guerra, Cullum Wallace, and Brandan Wallace from Texas. First stop was at a drum hole, and there Cullum hooked into and landed a black drum in the 30-pound class. On clear Yo-Zuri Hybrid 10-pound-test, and a medium action 7-foot St. Croix “Triumph” rod, well, you can imagine the fight Cullum had on his hands. But in the end he was victorious!

041

Fello Guerra of Texas with a huge black drum he caught in the Back Bay of Biloxi while fishing with Capt. Robert L. Brodie aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

Caught a few more drum there, and then they decided to try the popping corks for a while. Only fished a short time, but they did manage to land 20 or so white trout and ground mullet.  Just before dark we stopped back at another drum hole, and a nice sheepshead and a 5 or 6 more drum were added to the box.

029

Here, Felo Guerra, Brandan Wallace, and Cullum Wallace are happy with Cullum’s big black drum caught aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

However, Felo hooked into an impressive fish, and a good while later a 40-pound specimen was landed. Like the big fish caught by Cullum, Felo’s fish was safely released to fight another day.

021

Cullum Wallace of Texas with a large black drum he caught in the Back Bay of Biloxi while fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

In total: 20 or more white trout and ground mullet, 1 big sheepshead, and 8 black drum added to the fish catching fun. Those big fish really added to the fishing excitement, and they led to some great photo shoots too.

MORNING TRIP – Sunday, November 16, 2008 – Ronnie and Sue Buice were back again after having so much fun last Friday morning. Although Ronnie lost his huge drum on Friday, well today he made up for the lost fish. On this outing he managed to land 2 of the brutes, and he even jumped overboard to grab a rod jerked out of his hands. I swear he did! He came up with the rod in his hands, and the fish was pulling him back under. Thank God the line broke, and I able to roll him back into the boat.

003

On his second outing, Ronnie Buice landed two big black drum aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

Now that’s a fish story, and a dedicated client! Ronnie did land a 30 pound and 40-pound class fish on this trip, and he was ecstatic about those two light tackle battles. After plenty of pictures both of the big fish were safely released. Fished the white trout reef for a short while too, and 20 or more nice white trout and ground mullet were landed.

016

Ronnie and Sue Buice pose with Ronnie’s second big black drum of the day caught aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. Ronnie caught this fish just after he jumped overboard to save one of my rods a fish jerked out of his hands. It’s cold and his clothes are completely wet! But look at that smile!

In total: 20 or more white trout and ground mullet, 3 big sheepshead, and  5 black drum made for a nice morning outing. Came in early, and it was wise to get Ronnie in out of the cold weather. Hey, no matter the weather or time of year there is always fish being caught aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

And don’t forget to book that diving duck hunt with us this winter, or even a “cast and blast trip”, you know, hunting in the morning and fishing in the afternoon.

Regards,

Capt. Robert L. Brodie of TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS
