Now back to Capt. Brodie’s fishing report…

On Friday I had John Noel from Jackson, MS, aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, one of my most regular clients, and although the fishing was a bit slow, well, John fished hard and managed to bring a good mixed catch back to the dock.

John has been fishing with me since the conception of TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, and we’ve had all sort of fishing adventures in the last couple of years. However today, a weird tide had things mess up it seemed, but John fished relentlessly, and some fine redfish, black drum, sheepshead, and flounders stole the show.

Heck, if you go back through the past reports we’ve had epic fishing days on pompano, huge speckled trout, sheepshead, black drum, as well as days of non stop fish catching with the big white trout and ground mullet.

Today however, John wanted a shot at some of the fine redfish I had been catching in the bay, and that’s how we started out. Vertical jigging with a live shrimp hooked to a plain jig was the ticket to success. When the day ended, we fished till dark, the final tally was 8 black drum, 3 gorgeous redfish, 2 nice flounders, and 8 or so fine sheepshead.

Brodie’s photography portfolio on flickr, and there you’ll find over 1500 of the captain’s best fishing and hunting pictures.

By the way, the big redfish are still prowling the flats out at the barrier islands, and all that is needed is some nice calm weather to catch them.

Also, ran a trip the day after this one, and it started at noon. With a strange tide, well, the bite on sheepshead, black drum, and redfish was simply dead. Ran out to the white trout reefs near the barrier islands where around 40 or so white trout and ground mullet were boxed.  The white trout bite was off too!  Probably should have hit the big redfish haunts, but with time running out I decided to head closer to home.

Ran back into the bay right before dark, and my two hard fishing anglers managed to land a nice flounder, a fine sheepshead, and a couple of black drum.  Yeah, it was one of those days, but we’ll get those funky tides at times that just puts the fish in a non eating mode.

GOOD TIDES COMING BACK

According to the tide tables in Harold Wells GULF COAST FISHERMAN (www.gulffishing.com), a fine magazine that I’ve wrote for many times over the years and have the cover shot credit for the fall 2009 issue, well, there will be many excellent days for fishing throughout December. Just the dates marked as excellent include the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 29th, 30th, and 31st, with most of the other dates considered fair to very good. And that’s good news after those crazy tides experienced on Sunday.

By the way, I forgot to wish everyone out there a Happy Thanksgiving Day, you know who you are, and hope that your food was incredibly good and time spent with family was priceless. I know mine was!

I’ve got a trip booked coming up in a day or so for barrier island redfish, but we’ll just have to see what this next cold front has to offer.

MISSISSIPPI SOUND BIG-WATER DUCK HUNTS

And don’t forget to book a diving duck hunt aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS this winter. Although the season is already open I have to admit fishing has kept me from getting all of the hunting gear ready. However, this week I’ll be working hard to get my act together in preparation of stalking the big redheads that winter on the big waters of the Mississippi Sound. These hunts go for $450, and that includes 2 hunters, and I bring along an assistant guide. Diving duck numbers are suppose to be up good this season, and looking forward to hunting divers including: redheads, greater and lesser scaups, buffleheads, as well as an occasional canvasback.

Until next fishing and hunting report keep it safe out there and food fishing and hunting!

Regards and many thanks to all,

Capt. Robert L. Brodie of TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS

PRICING: Fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS is a great bargain in today’s economy. Capt. Brodie is a full-time year-round fishing guide with nearly 50-years of experience fishing south Mississippi’s fish-filled waters. A “5-hour” half-a-day trip goes for $350 and an “8-hour” all-day trip goes for $450. Better yet, 4 anglers can split that price, and that makes it truly a great deal. Also, ice, bait, tackle, fuel, MS fishing license, and fish cleaning is all included in the package. You simply walk on and off the boat. It’s that easy!

Now back to Capt. Brodie’s latest fishing report…

DAY ONE-November 22, 2009

Tackle Used Today

Shimano Spinning Reels

St. Croix  Rods

Gamatatsu 1/0 Octopus Hooks

Seaguar 30-Pound-Test Fluorocarbon Leader Material

Yo-Zuri Hybrid Clear 10-Pound-Test

D.O.A. Shrimp (Glow & Chartreuse)

H & H  Jig Heads 5/8-Ounce (Chartreuse & White)

Live Shrimp From “Fort Bayou Bait Camp” in Ocean Springs, MS

Fishing Tip

Using a plain jig head can be a deadly way to fish a live or dead shrimp. To fish a live shrimp on a plain jig simply insert the hook up under the head and out the top. This way the shrimp will be fished head first in a natural upright position. However, to avoid killing the shrimp be sure to avoid penetrating the dark spot (brain) in the head. Also, there are times when more scent dispersal is needed for example in muddy water. Often, I’ll pinch the tail off a live shrimp, and then thread it on the jig from the tail to the head. Jigs are a simple, yet deadly way to fish various live baits, and the redfish and huge black drum in the following reports are a prime example of successful jig and live shrimp fishing. You’ve heard the old saying “Keep it simple stupid!”, well it doesn’t get any easier than that. Good jig fishing!

Once again Jim Underwood from northern Alabama was back to fish aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, this time bringing along Jack Underwood and Sander Tverberg, and you couldn’t have asked for a better group of gentlemen to fish with. Although Jim wanted to catch a bit of everything, well, it was some hard fighting redfish he wanted the most.  This would be two days of fishing, and the first day we would fish inshore, and then according to plans head off to the barrier islands on the next day for the redfish.

Brodie at (228) 697-7707 or by e-mail at: email hidden; JavaScript is required. Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie. Click on picture for bigger view!

On our first day we started out trolling for speckled trout, and although the bite was off from a few days ago they managed to box 5 nice speckled trout, and release a number of fish just under the 13-inch limit. From there it was time to go to plan B, and that was going after big sheepshead and black drum. Hadn’t been to the drum and sheepshead holes in a while, but the bite was good, and the guys easily boxed 14 big sheepshead, as well as 14 black drum with a number of throwbacks. By the way, some of these sheepshead a.k.a. “bay snapper” were really big specimens, and on 10-pound-test spinning tackle they were a blast to catch.

From there it was a run to the mouth of the bay, and Jim’s wish to catch nice redfish would come quicker than he expected. Using live shrimp on jig heads it didn’t take long for the big reds to have the men in a fishing frantic. While vertical jigging often two fish at a time would have the men bowed up. However, the area is loaded with underwater structure, and may big fish cut them off on the barnacle-encrusted concrete and pilings. Although they still managed to land 5 nice reds, 7 or 8 really big fish were lost to the debris below. And by the way, sheepshead, and black drum were in the area too.

Water conditions in the bay were excellent with a steady moving tide, clear water, and not a breath of wind. The men had the ice chest full by noon, and Jim decided to head in early with their big catch. Good call..I had plenty of fish to fillet, skin, debone, and package up before the next day’s adventure. And the beauty of this day’s catch was it all took place just a few minutes from the launch, thus all of their time was denoted to fish catching fun.

DAY TWO-November 23, 2009

On a short outing, Jim Underwood, Jack Underwood, and Sander Tverberg caught redfish, flounder, white trout, sheepshead, and speckled trout while fishing in the Back Bay of Biloxi aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS - Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie

Since Jim, Jack, and Sander had a 6-hour drive home, well, Jim decided today’s trip would be a short one, and instead of running out to the barrier islands fishing in the bay for more redfish would be the game plan. So back at the redfish honey hole for more vertical jigging with live shrimp. Another good call because it didn’t take long before more big redfish were stripping drag on the light spinning gear.

Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie. Click on picture for bigger view!

Not only were redfish on the prowl, but black drum, flounder, sheepshead, specks, and flounders were in the area too. And speaking of big black drum, Sander hooked into a monster, and about 20-minutes later he landed and released a magnificent 40-pound-class specimen. What a great highlight to the trip!

Before 11 a.m. the men boated 5 more beautiful redfish, kept a few big white trout, as well as a flounder and a nice speck, and released a number of nice sheepshead, black drum, and numerous small redfish. Sad to day, once again some monster reds were lost on the structure littered bottom, but that’s all part of the structure fishing game. With another morning of light tackle fun under their belt Jim decided to get back in early to the D’Iberville Marina where I would clean the fish caught on this outing.

What more can I say! Two excellent days of light tackle bay fishing with 3 easy going gentlemen that fished hard taking advantage of the many bounties the fish-filled Back Bay of Biloxi has to offer. Jim, once again than you for your business, and hope to see you sometime down the road for another fishing adventure aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS.

Hey, you too can get on this action, and the bay’s hard-fighting fish are there for the taking. And like I say, there is always something to bend a rod year-round in south Mississippi, so be sure to take advantage of the fishing with this enjoyable cool weather.

Regards and many thanks to all,

TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS Delivers Nice Speckled Trout While Slow Trolling In Coastal Rivers

BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI FISHING - 2170 Blazer Bay - Photo By Capt. Robert L. Brodie

Fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS is quite affordable. Half-a-day trips (5-hours) are merely $350, and an all-day trip (8-hours) goes for $450. Included in the package is ice, bait, top-quality tackle, fuel, MS fishing license, as well as fish cleaning. Capt. Brodie was born and raised in the shores of the Back Bay of Biloxi, has nearly 50-years of fishing and hunting experiences on these waters, and he strives to be professional, polite, and productive. You won’t find a harder working, more diverse, knowledgeable, and more productive captain in south Mississippi. If you have a party larger than 4, accommodations can be arranged to take larger groups fishing.

Now back to Capt. Brodie’s latest fishing report…

Looking for a laid back and extremely enjoyable day of fishing in south Mississippi? Well, book a trip aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS and try slow trolling for speckled trout now that the weather is cool. What we do is this! First we make our way into one of south Mississippi’s gorgeous coastal rivers or bayous, a place where the scenery is gorgeous and the waters are quite protected from the wind.

TROLLING FOR SPECKLED TROUT - Kevin Toncrey of Biloxi, MS had a great time trolling for speckled trout in Mississippi's coastal rivers aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS - Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie

ABOVE: Kevin Toncrey of Biloxi, MS is happy with his catch of speckled trout made 11-18-2009 while slow trolling aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. Want a shot at catching some of these gorgeous and delicious speckled trout by slow trolling? Well then, simply call Capt. Brodie at (228) 697-7707 or e-mail the captain at . Now that the weather is cool, well, it’s the optimum time to enjoy slow trolling for specks in south Mississippi. Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie

Next, we motor along at idle speed, and then cast out 4 to 5 lines behind the boat, all baited up with soft-plastic or jerk baits, all artificial. Once all of the lines are staggered out properly behind the boat we simply continue to troll along these beautiful waterways, and wait for the rods to bend from a sudden strike. Heck, you can sit back and relax, drink a hot cup of coffee and snack on your food. Now that’s fishing!

Trolling For Speckled Trout Aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS - Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie

ABOVE: Kevin Toncrey slow trolling for speckled trout aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. Slowly motoring down coastal rivers and bayous with multiple artificial baits being trolled behind the boat is a fun and relaxing way to fish for speckled trout. You can simply kick back in one of the pedestal chairs on the stern, and wait in anticipation for one of the rods to suddenly bend over.  Is it fun? You bet, and now through the winter is a great time to experience trolling for speckled trout aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie

If we catch a couple of fish we simply troll back through the same area looking for another strike. By the way, trolling for specks is generally productive even on cold mornings, and you can pick up fish here and there throughout the day. Today for example, my good friend Kevin Toncrey of Biloxi, MS enjoyed such action in a coastal bayou, and in a couple of hours he boated 14 really nice specks, a fine flounder, and released many specks just under the 13-inch limit.

Also, if we find an area delivering fish on each pass, we’ll then put down the trolling motor, or anchor up and cast into the area looking for the concentration of fish. Slow trolling is really fun for something out of the ordinary, and just a great way to sit back and chill out while catching the highly-prized speckled trout.

Just another aspect of the diverse fishing conducted aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. OK, so now we have slow trolling for specks, bull reds and big black drum at the barrier islands, hordes of white trout in the Mississippi Sound, and sheepshead and black drum on all bay bridges and various other structure. So give me a call and let’s go catch a mess of fish!
