Above: Regulars aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS, Don Thomason and his son Brad enjoyed a day of fun inshore fishing close to home. Ran to the barrier islands in search of Spanish mackerel and sheepshead, but the sheepshead spawn seems to be over, and the Spanish weren’t in the area. It was a bit rough too! So it was time for Plan-B, and that was going in search of some tasty flounders. Don never needs nor wants many fish to take home, in his words “just a few quality fish”, and today 12 flounders, 5 nice specks, and 2 black drum was plenty for his needs. We always have a great time, these guys are great wits, and we cut up and have fun all day long. Don has fished with me for years, and we’ve had many great fishing adventures together aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. Very seldom does Don “sanction” a big fish kill on our outings, yet over the years we had plenty of memorable catches of sheepshead, Florida pompano, redfish, black drum, speckled trout, white trout, ground mullet, and flounders. Oh yeah, and on winter time trout fishing trips in the rivers we’ve even caught some big freshwater catfish too! Great fishing memories! By the way, we had 3 flounders escape off the fish cleaning table while taking photos and cleaning fish, but it was OK because it wasn’t to be a big fish kill day…just a few quality fish. ABOVE: At the D’Iberville Marina, Don Thomason and his son Brad from Alabama trying to keep fish from jumping off the fish cleaning table. The father and son duo had great fun catching these flounders, speckled trout, and black drum while fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. Today fishing for flounders was Plan-B, but it worked out well with 12 keepers, and 5 nice speckled trout, and a 2 black drum added to the nice inshore catch. For two of the biggest flounders I filleted the top side open so Don could fill them with a crab meat stuffing before being baked up nicely. Most of the flounders fell for fresh cut bait fished on the bottom. A simple bottom rig composed of a 1-ounce weight, 1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook, and 30-pound-test Seaguar fluorocarbon leader material fooled the flounders. By the way, getting a late start on the flounders probably kept the guys from getting 2 complete limits, but a dozen flounders is a good catch any day of the week. Photo by Capt. Robert L. Brodie
