Departed the Point O’ Pines launching site on Bayou Cumbest in Moss Point, MS on a rainy morning. Accompanied by Van Clark and Joe Gonzalez, we ventured out into the Mississippi Sound in my 19-foot G3 jonboat “Team Brodie Charters†in search of tripletail a.k.a. “blackfishâ€. Neither Van nor Joe had caught a blackfish and were eager to land one of these elusive and odd-looking fish. Lucky for us the fish showed themselves under crab trap corks, derelict duck blinds, and pilings. The outing resulted in an epic morning of tripletail angling, and we went 5 for 5 on some gorgeous specimens ranging from 6 to 12-pounds. Van’s fish mad two vertical leaps over 5-feet into the air, an amazing sight, better yet…priceless! Our last fish of the day was Joe’s double-digit trophy. For bait we used fresh dead squid. Our gear was spinning and bait-casting combos spooled with Yo-Zuri Hybrid 12-pound-test fluorocarbon line. Out terminal tackle consisted of a fluorescent green Cajun Thunder clacking cork followed by 2-feet of 30-pound-test Seaguar fluorocarbon leader material, and finished off with a size 4 4X Strong Gamakatsu Treble Hook. Success stemmed from a three-man team with an angler working a rod, a man quick with the landing net, and a man at the helm properly handling the G3 and its quiet and efficient Yamaha 4-stroke outboard. If you’re looking for something different in the line of angling then give chasing tripletail a shot. And by the way, the white and succulent flesh of a blackfish is undoubtedly one of the best eating fish that roams the Gulf of Mexico, and visits our near shore waters during summer months. Hey, triple your fun, we did!
